The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem Our design goal in the exhibition was to bring to life the story of the origins of the Jews that lived in Shiba (Ancient Yemen) and their connection to the land of Israel. The timeline goes back from the ancient times up until the modern day. By following the traces of the “spice route”, the physical connection where merchants convoyed spices across the region for hundreds of years.
We extracted colors from photographs that were recently taken in Yemen and used those to create a bold and vibrant color palette for the exhibition walls in order to enhance the sensory experience of the visitors. In addition, we transformed the ornaments which were once used as architectural motifs in the old city of Sanaa into graphics and represented them on the walls.
The main showcase of the exhibition is designed to display fascinating archaeological relics. We staged the vitrines to form a path for visitors to walk by while resonating with the ancient spice route.
Additional silhouettes of spice trees are located at designated spots throughout the exhibition. To give the visitors a complete experience to the senses, we also designed perfume bottles which are mounted on a wall, inviting visitors to smell oil extracted from different spices.
